What Is Holding You Back?

Can you think of one thing that is holding you back from living a full life?

For me it's fear. Fear of failure, fear of what others might think, fear of not being good enough!

All these different thoughts that most of us carry with us, holds us back from living our ultimate, authentic life. It also leads us down a very damaging path of stress. 

Yup! Fear leads to stress! 
 

What is stress?

 

According to Hans Selye in 1936 he coined the term stress, and defined it as

 

"The non specific response of the body to any demand for change"  

 

These changes can be positive or negative, real or perceived.  The nerve chemicals and hormones released during these times prepares us to face a threat or flee to safety - like the Fight - or - flight response. When you are faced with a stressful situation your body goes into changes all aimed at survival.  However these same hormones that are released to keep us safe in the long run can cause loads of damage to our health and well being.  The autonomic nervous system is the primary mechanism in control of the fight - or - flight response, and also regulates our heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate and many others.  Its main function is to activate the physical changes that occur during these stressful moments.

Our bodies are not able to differentiate between life threatening stress, positive or negative, real or perceived.   They all go thought the same process of releasing hormones that can have long side effects.

 

A great exercise to help you balance your fight - or flight responses and regulate the amount of hormones being released throughout your body is to create a list of REAL and PERCEIVED stress. Example below

 

 

REAL                                    |                   PERCEIVED

                                                                    Fear of not being good enough

 

 

After putting your list together notice what are the thoughts and stresses you can let go off and which ones are worth you allowing your body to fight or flight.
