A new beginning! A new chance to reach for the stars!
I’m not sure about you, I love new beginnings, new opportunities, new chances to achieve more than what I have currently achieved. The beginning of a new year gives us all of these feelings and provides us with an enormous opportunity to do better and grow.
Most of us at this time have already created resolutions determined that this year we will reach for the stars. Statistics have also shown that only 8% of us achieve our new year’s resolution. Reasons for such a high number of people that give up on their resolution is based on setting too many and being derailed by small mistakes. New year’s resolutions are typically based on all or nothing; usually created on unrealistic expectations, not giving us any room to make mistakes and allowing us to pick ourselves back up to continue. We set ourselves up for failure!
The tradition of creating new year’s resolutions date back to 153 B.C. During early Rome times, the month of January was named after the mystical god, Janus. Janus was represented having 2 faces, one looking forward and one looking back. Romans imagined Janus looking back into the old year and also looking forward into the new year. This gave Romans hope for the future (resolutions for the new year) and strength to forgive enemies for their troubles in the past.
Whatever your resolution is, we all have hopes for the future. A New Year's resolution is a promise that we make for the new year to come. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve your life in the coming year.
What if we were to lose the resolutions and actually set goals towards what we want?
The best way to set yourself up for success in the new year is to learn about yourself and create SMART goals, instead of resolutions.
Find a quite place and give yourself enough time to answer these very powerful questions to get you ready for success…
1) What are the things that I’m most passionate about?
Learning about the things that you enjoy most in this world and creating time to spend doing them is the first step to living a more fulfilling life. What do you love? What can you do for hours without realizing time is flying by?
When we create our lives around the things we love, we set ourselves up for happiness and a fulfilled future.
Figure out what you love and then make a point to do more of it this year!
2) If my life had absolutely no limits, what would I choose to do?
If you had no limits to stop you from doing the things that are most valuable to you, what would you do? Who would you spend it with?
Answering these questions honestly can help you figure out what you want to do with your life and help you create steps to fufill your goals.
Creating space to learning more about YOU sets you on a path to create a life that is filled with joy and happiness. Remember it’s often the journey to reaching for that special place that is the most fulfilling part. It’s during these small steps towards the end of the goal that you fill most accomplished.
Get out there and take the first step toward improving your life.
